Pulitzer Prize and Tony-Award winning playwright, Neil Simon, brings his unique humor to this 1970s play. California Suite is a comedy composed of 4 ‘playlets’. All four short plays center on the happenings of Suites 203 and 204 in The Beverly Hills Hotel. Marriage, relationships, and human emotion give this play a real but humorous look into the lives of the California Suite guests.

California Suite Cast Bios
Carly Bellock (Bunny, Understudy Beth Hollender) is loving her second year here at NMU. She transferred here last year from College of Dupage located in the suburbs of Chicago. This is her fourth year studying for her degree as a communications major. Carly is also feeding her passion with a double minor in Theater and Dance. She fell in love with the stage in her debut during her first dance recital at the age of three. The theme was “The Little Mermaid” and she played a guppy. Since then she has done modeling in Chicago, signed with two different agencies in downtown Chicago, and won a Show Choir National Championship in 2012. One of her favorite times on stage was with Jane Lynch on Windy City Live her senior year of high school. Since then, some of Carly’s recent roles have been Laker Girl in Spamalot (Lake Superior Theater) June in Chicago (Northern Michigan University) and Jessica Cranshaw in Curtains (Wheaton-Warrenville High School). She would like to thank her mom for her constant love, support, and inspiration.
Mary Glittenberg (Hannah Warren) is a sociology major at Northern Michigan University, she also has her cosmetology degree. She has appeared in The Boxcar Children (Eau Claire Children’s Theatre), Annie (ECCT), The Never Ending Story (ECCT), Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus (ECCT), Fiddler on the Roof (Eau Claire Memorial High School), Seussical (ECCT), The Outsiders (ECCT), Blue’s Clues LIVE (ECCT), Aladdin (ECCT), Enchanted Sleeping Beauty (ECCT), Oliver! (ECCT), The White Room of My Remembering (EC Memorial HS), Crazy for You (EC Memorial HS), The Wizard of Oz (ECCT), Tom Sawyer (ECCT), Bridge to Terabithia (ECCT), and There’s a Boy in the Girl’s Bathroom (ECCT). Mary would like to thank her mom, dad and brothers for coming all the way to the UP to support her.
Korinne Griffith (Diane Nichols) is a theatre and entertainment arts major and marketing minor at Northern Michigan University. Korinne was recently onstage in the Forest Roberts Theatre production of A Paper Tiger in the Rain and Lake Superior Theatre’s production of Quilters. Some other favorite roles include Berthe in Pippin, Martha in The Secret Garden, and Mother Courage in Mother Courage and her Children. Korinne has also worked on many shows as the head of wardrobe crew; some titles include The Producers, Chicago, Tribes, and Little Shop of Horrors. California Suite is Korinne’s Senior Capstone performance. Her thanks goes out to Ansley for this opportunity and her parents for their never-ending patience.
Charles Owsley (Mort Hollender) is a sophomore from Sleeping Bear Dunes, MI, just 30 minutes west of Traverse City. This is his first production Black Box production, and he couldn’t be more stoked to be a part of the FRT community. Notable past roles include Joey Evans in Pal Joey, Fagin from Oliver!, and Marvin from Salesgirl as a part of NMU’s Ten Minute Play Festival. He expects to graduate from NMU in 2018 with a B.S. in communication studies and minor in international studies.
Anthony Pruett (Sidney Nichols) is finishing his program in international studies at Northern Michigan University at the end of June then will be pursuing teaching English as a second language in South Korea for seven months. Afterwards, he will return to his home in New York and continue his masters. He would like to thank his dog Mason, for being his number one fan who's always there for him. He has loved the opportunities to perform many times on both the Forest Roberts theatre and James A. Panowski Black Box stages over the years. Some of his favorite roles have been Snoopy in Snoopy and Billy Flynn in Chicago. He would like to thank Jesus for this wonderful show and everyone in it.
Vanessa Pruett (Understudy Hanna, Millie, Gert) is in her last semester here at Northern Michigan University. She is working towards a Bachelor’s in media production new technology and a minor in theater. Vanessa is originally from the Upper Peninsula, but spent four years in Boston where she obtained an Associates’ degree in the science of broadcasting and worked as a radio producer for CBS Boston. Vanessa looks forward to moving back to a city after she accomplishes her education at Northern.
Brady Skewis (Marvin Michaels) is a junior at Northern Michigan University. California Suite marks his 16th performance in his 4th year of acting. Some of the roles he has played include Angel in RENT (Vista Theater), Will Parker in Oklahoma! (Negaunee High School) and The Great Mage Steve in She Kills Monsters (Forest Robert's Theatre). In his spare time, Brady likes to pretend he has spare time. He would like to thank his incredibly supportive parents, David and Wendy, as well as his beautiful girlfriend, Eliisa Gladwell.
Dorsey Sprouls (Billy Warren, Stu Franklyn) is entering his fourth year here at NMU, where he double majors in theatre and illustration. He is excited to start the year off so quickly with California Suite. He has participated in many shows during his time at Northern, including the FRT productions of A Comedy of Errors (Dromio of Syracuse), A Paper Tiger in the Rain (Ben Flynn), Little Shop of Horrors (Orin Scrivello, Skip Snip, etc.), and the Lake Superior Theatre production of Spamalot (Prince Herbert, Historian, etc.). He would especially like to thank the creative team of California Suite and his eternally supportive friends and family.
Elizabeth Trueblood (Gert Franklyn) is a junior at Northern Michigan University, majoring in English and double minoring in theatre and writing. Production credits include She Kills Monsters (Assistant Stage Manager) and Tribes (Stage Manager) at the Forest Roberts Theatre. Past performance credits include Brighton Beach Memoirs (Kate Jerome) at Onalaska High School, and A Kind of Alaska (Pauline), Les Miserables (Ensemble), A Paper Tiger in the Rain (Kelly Shagers), and Little Shop of Horrors (Chiffon) at the Forest Roberts Theatre. Liz is extremely excited to be a part of The California Suite—she would like to thank her friends and family for their unending love and support!
Jill Vermeulen (Beth Hollender) is a NMU junior majoring in theater and communications with a dance minor. Some of her recent performances include Crystal in Little Shop of Horrors (Forest Roberts Theatre), Hunyak in Chicago (Forest Roberts Theatre), Ava in A Paper Tiger in the Rain (Forest Roberts Theatre), Player and dance captain in Pippin (Lake Superior Theatre), Kaliope in She Kills Monsters (Forest Roberts Theatre), Luce in Comedy of Errors (Forest Roberts Theatre), dancing in An American in Paris (Forest Roberts Theatre), Ensemble/Understudy Cosette in Les Misérables (Forest Roberts Theatre), and Lisa in Beacon on the Rock (Lake Superior Theatre). She recently assistant choreographed Spamalot (Lake Superior Theatre), assistant choreographed Mary Poppins (Lake Superior Youth Theatre), Directed Narnia (Lake Superior Youth Theatre), assistant directed Honk Jr. (Lake Superior Youth Theater), choreographed Shrek, the Musical (Marquette Senior High School), and was the Who choreographer for Seussical, Jr. (Lake Superior Youth Theater).
California Suite Staff Bios
Ansley Valentine (Director) is director of theatre at Northern Michigan University. A seasoned actor, director and choreographer, recent productions include Hello, Dolly!; Annie Get Your Gun; I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change; The King and I; Sound of Music; and Mrs. Warren’s Profession. His resume boasts professional and academic theatres across the country (including productions with the Indianapolis, Detroit and Alabama Symphonies). He holds a master of fine arts from Indiana University and a bachelor of arts from Wabash College.
Alysa Spivak (Director) is a senior at Northern Michigan University majoring in theatre and entertainment arts and minoring in sociology. Production credits include 1776 (Spotlights), Bears (Assistant Stage Manager), Legally Blonde (Spotlights), and Body Talk (Directing Class). Directing “Visitors from New York” for California Suite is Alysa’s senior capstone and she cannot be more excited! She feels extremely fortunate to study with such talented peers and faculty members during her time at NMU. Northern has helped her acquire knowledge, discover herself, and grow into her work. After graduation, Alysa hopes to work in Orlando, FL for the Walt Disney Company and apply her knowledge and enthusiasm to the Entertainment wing at the Walt Disney World Resort. She thanks her family, friends, and faculty for their continuous support!
Dakota Vogel (Production Stage Manager) is a junior theater major at NMU. Dakota's Performance credits here at NMU include Player (A Comedy of Errors) and Monster Chorus (She Kills Monsters). His Technical Credits Include Assistant Stage Manager (Chicago and Little Shop of Horrors), Director (A House of Cards), and Assistant Director (Tribes). This is Dakota’s first time Stage Managing, which has been an enjoyable and enlightening experience. He thanks his friends and family for their support.
Victor G. Holliday (Light Design) has been the designer for The Forest Roberts Theatre since 1982, and also served as technical director from 1982-2000. He earned his bachelor of arts in psychology from St. Johns University (Minnesota), and his master of fine arts in scenic design from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Before coming to NMU, he was designer and technical director at Trenton State College (now The College of New Jersey). Vic has also designed for summer and community theatres and dance companies in Hawaii, Michigan, Wisconsin, New Jersey, and North Carolina. Outside of the theater, his major interests are history (particularly military and naval history) and ship modeling (pre-dreadnought steel navy), and he is an active ailurophile.
Emily Kinne (Properties Master) is a senior Theater major at Northern Michigan University. She has been an Assistant Stage Manager for many productions at the Forest Roberts Theater including Les Miserables, Avenue Q, Legally Blonde, and Compleat Female Stage Beauty, and has stage managed Comedy of Errors, and Jack and the Beanstick. She also worked as an ASM on the Lake Superior Theater production of Pippin. She is also a Stage Properties Designer, and has designed the props for Les Miserable, Pinocchio, Jack and the Beanstalk, and A Paper Tiger in the Rain.
David Pierce (Technical Director) David came to NMU from Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, KY where he had been Technical Director for the Department of Theatre and Dance. Other TD credits include Adirondack Theatre Festival, Little Theatre on the Square, and Four Seasons Theatre Company. David holds a BS in Construction Management from Ferris State University and an MFA in Theatre Technology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In his spare time, he loves to be outdoors. He enjoys hiking, boating, fishing, biking, and bonfires. He’s also a boisterous Tigers fan!
