CARES Act: Education Stabilization Report

Acknowledgement: Per sponsor requirements, NMU submitted the Department the Certification and Agreement and the assurance that the institution commits to use no less than 50 percent of the funds received under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students. This certification was submitted 19 APR 2020.

Total amount received: NMU qualified for and received funds from the Department pursuant to the institution’s Certification and Agreement for Emergency Financial Aid Grants to Students $2,997,309 (in student-targeted funding)

Total amount distributed: As of 8 MAY 2020, NMU had distributed to students, under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act a total of $1,269,557.

Total number of students eligible: The estimated total number of students at Northern Michigan university eligible to participate in programs under Section 484 in Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 and thus eligible to receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants under Section 18004(a)(1) is 4,787.

Total number of students served: As of 8 MAY 2020, NMU had distributed Emergency Financial Aid Grant support, under Section 18004(a)(1) of the Cares Act, to a total of 2,044 students.

Methods: The method(s) used by NMU to determine student recipients of Emergency Financial Aid Grants, and the amount they receive(d), under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act was created by NMU as a model of a new internal application for relief funds established by the NMU Foundation. That fund distributed funds to students in need and expired 1 MAY 2020. The application for CARES funds is available to students here: https://aditweb.nmu.edu/fa/caresact/
