Welcome to the Earth, Environmental and Geographical Sciences Department at Northern Michigan University!
The faculty and staff of our department are dedicated to helping our students achieve their goals at NMU while planning for the future. We believe in providing a broad, rigorous academic background that includes field experiences and hands-on learning opportunities. We offer thoughtful advising and mentoring to help students plan the best possible course of studies. The number of undergraduates majoring in our student-centered department has grown to about 300.
The EEGS programs include Environmental Studies and Sustainability, Environmental Science, Earth Science, and Geomatics. We also offer minors that coordinate well with majors in other departments, and you might find an intriguing course that opens your eyes while satisfying a liberal studies requirement. The Upper Peninsula provides a beautiful and practical setting for learning about the environment.
Our curriculum prepares students for a wide range of careers such as environmental consulting, ecological restoration, scientific research, sustainable farming, resource mapping, and watershed protection. Some of our students have pursued graduate degrees in marine policy and environmental law, environmental studies, geology, geography, archaeology, water resources, and GIS.
We engage students with various research initiatives and community events. Every semester EEGS majors gain useful experience in environmental fields. We assist students in arranging internship opportunities at federal or state agencies, private companies, environmental consulting firms, and non-profit organizations.
Students may also find that one of our student organizations helps them learn and grow in unanticipated ways.
Visitors are welcome to stop by the EEGS Department office in 3001 New Science Facility. We can also be reached at (906) 227-2500 or by e-mail at email@example.com. Here's to collaborative learning about this fascinating and ever-changing world!
