Joshua Hechtman

Officer Hechtman was appointed a U.S. Probation Officer of the Western District of Michigan on January 6, 2007. Under this role he  simultaneously conducted pretrial investigations, wrote presentence reports as well as supervised both pretrial and post-conviction case loads. In addition he has served on an initiative to bring the practice of core-correctional practices into the federal probation system, served as an instructor on his district's firearms and safety team, and on December 14,2012, he was recognized as the recipient of the Thomas E. Gahl Great Lakes Region Line Officer of the Year Award. Officer Hechtman brings prior work experience in juvenile justice, child welfare, residential substance abuse, and inpatient mental health treatment.

LeeRoy Hegwood

LeeRoy Hegwood currently holds the position of Sr. Corporate Investigator for Coinstar, Inc. This includes the responsibility for the internal and external investigations and Loss Prevention programs throughout North America, the U.K. and Ireland.  LeeRoy has worked in the Loss Prevention field since 1996 and has held multiples roles including undercover floor agent, LP District Investigator, LP District Manager, LP Regional Manager and Sr. LP Manager. He also served six years in the U.S. Army Reserves as an Intelligence Analyst.


Jay Johnston

Jay Johnston is employed as a Special Agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and has held this position since 1997. Special Agent Johnston is currently assigned to the FBI's Detroit Division, Marquette Resident Agency. He has also served in the FBI's Chicago Division, as well as at FBI Headquarters, in Washington, D.C. He has investigated almost all of violations of federal law, with an emphasis on violent crime, domestic terrorism and Russian  Organized Crime. Special Agent Johnston obtained both his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Business Administration from Spring Arbor University. Prior to his employment with the FBI, he was a Deputy Sheriff in southern Michigan, for approximately eight years. Special Agent Johnston has experience in instructing a variety of law enforcement topics, which include forensic science, criminology, defensive tactics and street survival.

Grant Patient

Grant Patient is a graduate of Northern Michigan University with his bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and is currently finishing his thesis In Criminal Justice Administration also from NMU. Grant has numerous years working as an investigator in the corporate and retail industry as well as conducting background investigations in the public sector. Grant worked many years in Chicago, Illinois which included traveling to many areas of the country conducting investigations. Grant is currently teaching CJ495 – Corporate and Private Investigations.
