Student Stories

Denci remembers living in residence halls and going to student activities on campus with her mom long before she herself was a student here. So when the time came for her to go to school, NMU was the perfect choice. Combining the program, the price of NMU compared to other Michigan universities and the student environment, "it was a no-brainer".

When asked what advice she would give to incoming students her reply was "Network.  Make friends in your classes.  Loss prevention is a small world and if this is the career for you, then you may be working with these people at some point in your career.  I really wish I would have realized that as I student when I was starting out.  Enjoy it.  Loss prevention is so much fun!  I still can’t believe I get a paycheck to do what I do. "I became interested in the online loss prevention program at NMU after finding that more and more retailers are requiring bachelor's degrees as a prerequisite to advanced loss prevention placement.  I am fortunate that my employer supports my continuing education. The courses are taught by current and former LP practioners who understand our business, as well as the skill sets needed to succeed. Of the countless real-world applications I developed through the program, I found the loss prevention problem-solving strategies to be especially relevant."

Steve Waligora

As a non-traditional student in an online program, Steve has had a very unique experience as a student at NMU. In the fall of 2015, he was as able to travel to Ireland with some of his fellow loss prevention management and criminal justice students.

"It was awesome to interact with everyone. I gave me a chance to meet professors and students that I would not have had being a solely online student over 8 hours away. Not to mention that we got to go to Ireland! One of the most beautiful countries in the world. Great people and a GREAT learning experience. "
