Credit/No Credit Grades Option Approved
As the semester end nears (May 2), Northern has had a significant number of concerned and compelling voices from both students and faculty regarding limitations and fairness of the Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory (S/U) grading scale option. This has caused the University to reconsider the use of that grading scale as the Winter 2020 option for students and, after a lengthy discussion with Academic Senate on April 22, to make the following adjustment:
- Create a CR/NC (Credit/No Credit) grading option and use this scale as the alternative choice given to students for the Winter 2020 semester.
- Grade of CR: A grade of “CR” (Credit) is issued when a course has been completed with the equivalent of a passing grade of D- or higher. Courses graded “CR” are counted in earned hours. “CR” grades are not included in the computation of the grade point average.
- Grade of NC: A grade of “NC” (No Credit) is issued when a course has been completed at a level below that required to earn academic credit. Courses graded “NC” are included in attempted hours, but not earned hours. “NC” grades are not included in the computation of the grade point average.
- A note would be added to this semester’s coursework on the student’s transcript indicating something to the effect of, “COVID-19: CR/NC grading alternative implemented.”
PLEASE NOTE: Nothing will change for faculty regarding the grading process. Faculty will assign final letter grades through mynmu, as usual.
As with the S/U option, students will have the opportunity to request, through mynmu, that their grade be converted to the CR/NC grading scale on a course-by-course basis.
This is a temporary accommodation for Winter 2020 only, based on impacts resulting from the COVID-19 crisis.
