A CDL A (Commercial Driver’s License – Class A) allows you to operate any combination of vehicles with a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 pounds or more, provided the towed vehicle is over 10,000 pounds. This license is required for drivers who operate tractor-trailers, semi-trucks, flatbeds, tankers, and other large commercial rigs. With a CDL A, you’re qualified for long-haul or regional trucking jobs, as well as local deliveries with heavy equipment.

A CDL A license also permits you to drive CDL B and CDL C vehicles, as long as you have the proper endorsements, making it the most versatile commercial license and opening the door to a wide range of career opportunities in the transportation and logistics industries.

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must possess a valid Michigan driver's license.
  • You are required to obtain a valid Class A Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP)  before the start of class. Securing your permit in advance ensures you’re fully prepared to participate in the hands-on training and skills testing components of the program.

A CDL B (Commercial Driver’s License – Class B) allows you to operate a single vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more, as long as the vehicle is not towing a trailer over 10,000 pounds. This license is commonly required for operating straight trucks, dump trucks, delivery trucks, box trucks, and buses, including school and city transit buses (with the proper endorsements).

While a CDL B license doesn’t cover large tractor-trailers like a CDL A does, it still qualifies you for a wide range of well-paying, local and regional driving jobs. It’s a great option for those looking to enter the commercial driving field without needing to operate combination vehicles.

Student Requirements:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must possess a valid Michigan driver's license.
  • You are required to obtain a valid Class B Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP)  before the start of class. Securing your permit in advance ensures you’re fully prepared to participate in the hands-on training and skills testing components of the program.
