Michigan Construction Students Increase Knowledge at Student Constructor Awareness Night
On November 2, the Associated General Contractors of Michigan (AGC) hosted SCAN (StudentConstructor Awareness Night). SCAN is an annual event designed for university students in construction management programs. It addresses technology and issues they may face once employed.
Students from Northern Michigan University and Michigan Technological University took site visits to learn more about the unique construction processes happening right now. A charter bus of students and contractors traveled in Marquette and visited the:
- NMU University Center Renovation
- F.D. Kuester Generating Station in Negaunee
- Nearly complete U.P. Health System Marquette Hospital
Following the site visits there was a dinner and the students took part in “speed networking” with constructors from The Boldt Company, Closner Construction and Gundlach Champion,Inc., providing an opportunity to discuss topics pertaining to the projects visited.
“I came to NMU without a declared major, and attended the SCAN event two years ago. After the job tours and dinner with the industry professionals, I was excited to declare Construction Management. The networking that night with the Skanska Closner management team provided an opportunity for me to intern at the new UPHS Hospital throughout this fall. I attended this year’s SCAN event with more awareness and passion for the industry, which helped me secure next summer’s internship with Miron Construction.”
Karlie Hanson, NMU construction management major
“Over the past two years, I have found the UP SCAN event to be an excellent opportunity for students in the Construction Management program to explore what the industry has to offer. This event has helped to expand
my interests in the construction field as well as broaden my horizons into sectors of the industry I never previously considered. Opportunities such as this, as well as my internship with The Christman Company, have provided me a considerable insight into my future in construction.”
Michael Willaert, NMU construction management major
