NMU Collaborates with Seoul Institute

Charles Ganzert (CAPS) gave three presentations on audio recording via interactive television for the Seoul Institute of the Arts as part of its CultureHub Series of lectures. His partners in the collaboration were professors JiHun Chang, an NMU graduate, and Ho-Jung Kang, an interpreter and member of the Seoul Institute music recording faculty.

Ganzert assigned the Seoul students a project: edit down Psy’s “Gangnam Style” song—which accompanied a signature dance that went viral on YouTube—into a sound bed of 90 seconds or less. The group asked if they could also add a video to the edited music and Ganzert agreed.

“In mid-June, I put together an audience of NMU faculty, students and friends to view the projects and talk with the Korean students. The result was a great meeting and rewarding discussion. The groups shared information about media production, new technology, music, video and culture. It was an interesting exchange and I hope to develop a long-term relationship with Professor Chang and the Seoul Institute. Because of the international time difference, the class took place from 8:30-10 p.m. But by the time 11 rolled around, the energized NMU group was still in the Learning Resources Center  reviewing and discussing the experience.”

A previous connection occurred when Seoul arts student YoungJong Lee wanted to finish his bachelor’s degree in America. Ganzert said Chang suggested he attend NMU. Lee went on to become the first international student speaker at NMU commencement and is completing his graduate studies at Northwestern University.
