Academic Affairs Committee

Members Present:  Mr. Jon LaSalle, Chair, Mr. Brian Cloyd, Dr. H. Sook Wilkinson, Dr. L. Garnet Lewis (via teleconference), Mr. Larry Inman, Dr. Douglas Roberts, Dr. Susan Koch, Dr. Les Wong, ex officio

 

The Academic Affairs Committee meeting was called to order at 1:08 p.m.

 

Academic Senate Update

Dr. David Boe, Chair of the Academic Senate, provided a summary of Senate committee work for fall 2010.  

 

Charter School Board Member Appointment and Update

Mr. William Pistulka, Charter Schools Officer, presented a proposed board member appointment for Burton Glen Charter School Academy.   Mr. Pistulka also provided an informational update on Charter School activities including the process for accepting new charter school applications.

 

The motion duly made and seconded the Committee recommends to the Board of Trustees the approval of the board member appointment.  This motion is part of the formal recommendations.

 

Recruitment Update

Dr. Susan Koch, Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs and Ms. Gerri Daniels, Director of Admissions updated the Committee on recruitment activities including Wildcat Weekend and the Presidential Scholars Competition.

 

New Program – TESOL Graduate Certificate

Dr. Susan Koch, Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs, presented a proposal for a new TESOL Graduate Certificate. 

 

After motion duly made and seconded the Committee recommends to the Board of Trustees the approval of this program.  This motion is part of the formal recommendations.

 

New Program – Master of Arts in Education:  Instruction

Dr. Susan Koch, Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs, presented a proposal for a new Master of Arts in Education:  Instruction program. 

 

After motion duly made and seconded the Committee recommends to the Board of Trustees the approval of this program.  This motion is part of the formal recommendations.

 

 

 

Program Deletion – Master of Arts in Education:  Elementary Education

Dr. Susan Koch, Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs, presented a proposal to delete the Master of Arts in Education:  Elementary Education program. 

 

After motion duly made and seconded the Committee recommends to the Board of Trustees the approval of the deletion of this program.  This motion is part of the formal recommendations.

 

Program Deletion – Master of Arts in Education:  Secondary Education

Dr. Susan Koch, Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs, presented a proposal to delete the Master of Arts in Education:  Secondary Education program. 

 

After motion duly made and seconded the Committee recommends to the Board of Trustees the approval of the deletion of this program.  This motion is part of the formal recommendations.

 

Center for Rural Community & Economic Development

Dr. Susan Koch, Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs, and Dr. Tawni Ferrarini, Director, Center for Economic Education & Entrepreneurship and Sam M. Cohodas Professor presented a proposal to create the Center for Rural Community & Economic Development. 

 

After motion duly made and seconded the Committee recommends to the Board of Trustees approval to establish the Center for Rural Community and Economic Development.  This motion is part of the formal recommendations.

 

Sabbatical Leave Report

Dr. Susan Koch, Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs, provided information on sabbatical leave requests.  Nine NMU faculty members have been awarded sabbaticals that will take place during the 2011-2012 academic year.

 

Road Map Update

Dr. Susan Koch, Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs, provided a Road Map update and discussed the ongoing progress in the Academic Affairs Division related to the Road Map to 2015.

 

Good of the Order

 

Dr. Susan Koch, Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs, shared several good of the order items with the Committee highlighting student and faculty achievements.
