For the week of Monday, August 15, 2011.
From the 6th floor
We're coming off another gorgeous weekend in Upper Michigan. As you can see by today's photo, it's a beautiful morning along the lakefront. The week ahead looks quite promising, also. Forecasters are calling for a chance of light rain Tuesday, but otherwise, sunny with temperatures in the mid '70s.

Alumni Couch Show
The NMU Foundation and the Student Art Gallery teamed up to produce "The Couch Show," a photo exhibit of NMU students (and a few faculty) sitting on traveling couch and telling about their NMU experience. More than 270 students had their photos taken in various locations around campus. Each student filled out a comment card about their NMU experience, which asked them to complete the sentence, "I'm here because ________." These expressions of pride, humor, inspiration and determination were celebrated in an exhibit during the year.
You can view the student gallery here.
Next, the traveling couch made an appearance at Summer Reunion and alumni were given the opportunity to have their photo taken and share their story.

Look for the couch during Homecoming activities and share your story.

NMU Theater schedule released
The Northern Michigan University theater program has unveiled its 2011-12 schedule of featured plays and special events. Mainstage productions include a comedy-drama about a London male actor whose livelihood playing female roles is put in jeopardy, a family-friendly musical about Frog and Toad, the regional premiere of a play tinged with echoes of Arab-American conflicts and a musical about a long-running county spelling bee.
The season opens with Compleat Female Stage Beauty Oct. 12-15. A Year with Frog and Toad is a musical that remains true to the spirit of the classic children’s tales as it follows two great friends—the cheerful and popular Frog and the rather grumpy Toad—through four fun-filled seasons. This show runs Nov. 16-19 with 10 a.m. matinees Nov. 15 and 18. It is rated G. The regional premiere of The Near East will be staged Feb. 15-18 and 21-25 in the James A. Panowski Black Box Theatre. Closing out the year is a musical, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. It runs April 18-21, with a 10 a.m. matinee on April 17.
Season tickets for Forest Roberts Theatre productions are available at all NMU Ticket outlets or online at www.nmu.edu/tickets. For curtain times and other production information, visit www.nmu.edu/frt.

"Looks like NMU Night at Comerica Park went well. That same weekend a fun group of NMU alumni got together to go to Miller Park to cheer on the Milwaukee Brewers. The Brewers beat the Astros, 6-2. Pictured are:

"I really enjoy and look forward to the e-mail containing 'What's New, NMU?' It has been 15 years since I have been in Marquette. My wife and I were in town celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary and my 35th year from graduation. We took in all the popular sights such as Presque Isle, Black Rocks, Sugarloaf, etc. What an awesome time! Lots of great memories. We stopped up to room 603 on Wednesday, the 3rd, but you were closed that day. Sorry to have missed you. Keep up the outstanding work with the publication."
