A letter from the Alumni Association Board of Directors President

A letter from NMU Alumni Association

President Sue Bilkey '82

Greetings Fellow Wildcats!

I’m excited to be writing you as President of the Alumni Association Board of Directors.  There are some great things happening with NMU and the Board and I want to introduce you to what we do.

First, I’d like to share a bit about our group.  Currently the Alumni Board has 21 members.  Almost everyone lives in the Great Lakes area (Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota) but there are a couple of us “outliers” and, living in Atlanta, I’m one of them!  Click here to see who we are and learn more about us.

Secondly, here's how we operate - The Board meets three times each year (September, February and June).   Our mission, in a nutshell, is to keep alumni engaged with the university.  We have five committees and each member serves on at least one committee.

  • Alumni Awards
  • Board Development
  • Engagement
  • Career and Professional Development

Meeting once per month, the committees develop programs that are relevant to their charter.   We work with and provide feedback to the NMU alumni relations staff on any alumni-focused initiatives (like Northern Magazine), and we also work in cooperation with the NMU Board of Trustees and the NMU Foundation Board of Trustees.  Every member of our Board is focused on using their experiences to help NMU continue to be a recognized leader in education.

Finally, there are two areas where you can help us!  We are actively recruiting alumni who would like to join our Board.  I can tell you that it is a very rewarding experience.  If you would like to apply for consideration to become a board member please click here and fill out the PDF application form.

The opportunity to recognize fellow alums through the Alumni Association Awards Program is very important.  We always seek nominations and if you know of any alumni you feel deserving of an award, our website has information on each award and how to make your nomination.

Thanks for taking time to read this letter.  Your input is appreciated, so feel free to send your thoughts, ideas and comments to nmualumniboard@gmail.com.

It’s a great day to be a Wildcat!

Best regards,

Sue Bilkey '82
