Achievements

Kate Sartori (Housing and Residence Life) received the 2012 Harbor of Light Award, given annually to an individual committed to promoting the mission and vision of the Women’s Center/Harbor House in Marquette. She earned the honor for her integral role in founding the grassroots NMU student organization Women for Women.

The statement from her award presentation reads, “This individual has a fiery passion, is driven to succeed and serves in a leadership role with a clear mission of mentoring and empowering women to realize their self worth, determine their path to success and develop to their full potential.”

Women for Women began as an effort to create programming opportunities between the five all-female house communities on campus. "We saw the need for programming between all of us who shared this one common

bond: sisterhood,” said Sartori, pictured with her 2011-12 staff adviser of the year plaque and surrounded by Women for Women members. “We started small and soon gained momentum. We have created, executed and participated in some rather large programming efforts around campus and are known at NMU and in the community as figureheads in fundraising for non-profit organizations across the state.”

The group’s outreach programs have included hair donation drives resulting in the collection of more than 2,000 inches of hair for the Michigan nonprofit organization Children with Hair Loss, sponsorship of multiple Relay for Life teams and the annual donation of more than $2,000 to Lee Denim Day, an organization dedicated to breast cancer research and awareness. Women for Women’s annual charity softball tournament donated $600 to the Marquette Women's Center.

Rachel Harris, Lizzie Corser, Stephanie Felton (Center for Student Enrichment) and Chuck Ganzert (Communications and Performance Studies) were in Boston Oct. 1-4 to learn more about Bentley University’s Academic Service Learning program. They met with Ed Zlotkowski, who has presented at NMU several times, and his staff. While in Boston, the delegation was able to get together with Student Leader Fellowship Program alumni who live in the area.
