Native American Heritage Month Under Way

One of the highlights of Northern's annual Native American Heritage Month celebration is the First Nations Food Taster. This year's event, featuring traditional and contemporary Native American fare, will be held from 5-8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, in the Jacobetti Center.

Advance tickets are $10 for the general public and $4 for NMU students with ID and children 12 and under. They may be purchased on campus at 112 Whitman Hall or 3001 C.B. Hedgcock. For more information, visit Food Taster.

Saturday, Nov. 8: NMU International Performing Arts Series concert with Grammy Award-winning artist Joanne Shenandoah, 8 p.m. in Kaufman Auditorium (see related story).

             

Monday, Nov. 10: “The Healing Power of Words” with award-winning author MariJo Moore, 6 p.m. Payne/Halverson Hall Lobby.

             

Tuesday, Nov. 11: Reading of original works by author MariJo Moore, 11 a.m. in 2906 West Science Building. Also, NMU student Michael Robinson will present the documentary “All Life is Sacred: The Long Walk II” at 7:30 p.m. in the Whitman Hall commons.

             

Thursday, Nov. 13: A free concert with award-winning musician Wade Fernandez will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Great Lakes Rooms of the University Center.

             

Monday, Nov. 17: The film “Four Sheets to the Wind” will be shown at 6 p.m. in 102 Jamrich Hall. April Lindala, director of the NMU Center for Native American Studies, will be the facilitator.

             

Throughout November, Olson Library will feature a display related to Native American heritage. All activities are presented by the Native American Student Association and the Center for Native American Studies with support from several campus and community entities.
