Board Receives Budget Update

State budget talks were scheduled to resume at 1 p.m. today as lawmakers struggle to reach an 11th-hour agreement that will avert a government shutdown when the state’s new fiscal year goes into effect on Monday. NMU Lobbyist David Haynes updated university trustees on the situation this morning.

Capital Outlay Request Approved

The NMU Board of Trustees approved a 2008-09 capital outlay project request and rolling five-year capital outlay facilities plan. Universities are required to submit both to the state on an annual basis.

Retiree Health Insurance Policy Updated

The NMU Board of Trustees approved an update to the university's retiree health insurance policy that reflects departmental name changes and organizations. Gavin Leach (Finance and Administration) said the language was updated, but there are no changes in the university's operations related to retiree health. The policy had not been updated since 1982. Kontio Honored by MGH

Sandra Kontio (Surgical Technology) received a double surprise recently when she was informed that Marquette General Hospital named both a classroom and new scholarship fund in her honor. She served 24 years as a surgical technologist in the hospital’s operating room before becoming the full-time director of Northern’s program in 1997. Full Story

 

Homecoming Reception Oct. 3

A faculty/staff Homecoming reception featuring free hors d'oeuvres and cash bar is scheduled from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, in the Peter White Lounge of the University Center. There will also be prize drawings for a variety of merchandise and gift certificates from area businesses, including a one-night stay at the Landmark Inn and dinner for two at Capers. Sponsored by the NMU Alumni Association, the reception is one of several activities planned for this year's celebration, which revolves around the theme "Dynamic Duos." Business Venture Competition Announced

The College of Business is inviting all NMU students, regardless of academic major, to participate in the "New Business Venture Competition" during the 2007-08 academic year.

Individual students or teams will be eligible to compete for a share of $10,000 in cash prizes. Full Story

UW banner United Way Campaign Begins

Pledge packets will be distributed next week for the 2007-08 workplace campaign to support the United Way of Marquette County. The money raised will be distributed among more than 30 non-profit member agencies that rely on financial support from the local United Way. Cathy Dehlin (General Counsel/EO) and Kathy Maki (Graduate Studies and Continuing Education) are co-coordinators of the campus campaign.

Kimberly Hegmegee (CAPS) grew up watching her dad work on lighting for her mom’s dance school recitals. Rather than spend time dancing in a tutu, Hegmegee preferred to shadow her dad and learned the behind-the-scenes, technical aspects of productions. Now she works as the technical director at NMU.
