Hart is Commencement Speaker

David Hart, a leading expert in connective tissue repair biochemistry and Northern Michigan University alumnus, will deliver the keynote address at NMU’s spring commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 6. He will also receive an honorary doctor of biochemistry degree.

             

Hart is the Calgary Foundation–Grace Glaum professor in arthritis research. He serves the University of Calgary as a professor of microbiology and infectious diseases, a professor of medicine in the division of rheumatology and clinical immunology, and a professor of surgery in the division of orthopedics. Hart is also an adjunct biochemistry professor at University of the North in the Republic of South Africa. He has been involved with numerous research studies and has several publications to his credit. He is co-founder of two biotech start-up companies and serves on the scientific advisory board of a third.

             

Hart received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from NMU in 1964 and a doctorate in biochemistry from Michigan State University in 1969. He completed postdoctoral research in the laboratory of Alfred Nisonoff at the University of Illinois Medical Center in Chicago in 1972.     

             

He received the Distinguished Alumni Award from NMU in 1993, and in 2005 he received the John A. Boezi Alumnus Award from MSU. Hart has also been honored twice with the W.D. Wilson Foundation Visiting Scientist Fellowship in the Republic of South Africa, and received the Alberta Ingenuity Fund-2005 APEGGA Summit Award for Innovative Research Excellence.

             

The commencement ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m. in the Superior Dome. It will be broadcast live on Public TV 13.
