Readers' Theater Presents Voices of Courage

A readers’ theater performance at NMU will feature compelling stories from the new book Voices of Courage: Inspiration from Survivors of Sexual Assault. It was written by a diverse group of 12 individuals – including a former NMU student – who share their personal accounts of survival in their own words.

A cast of readers comprised of campus and community members has assembled to share these uplifting examples of strength and determination. They will give a free performance at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, in the Great Lakes Rooms of the University Center. Doors open at 7 p.m. and seating is limited.

Three student interns are the theater project co-coordinators: Jodi Hanford of the health, physical education and recreation department, and Stacy Ekdahl and Amanda Morse of the School of Nursing.

“This project would never have happened without the support from the student interns from academic departments who volunteered to pitch in," said Lenny Shible (Health Promotion Office) . "We've been working on this since May and this will be the premiere performance based on the book."

Morse added, “The stories in this piece are quite compelling, and I think hearing them told in the style of The Vagina Monologues will make them even more powerful."

The sexual assaults discussed in the book include child molestation, incest, clergy abuse, "date rape drug" facilitated, acquaintance rape, marital rape and stranger attack. Voices of Courage was edited by Mike Domitrz, who was motivated by his own sister’s sexual assault to develop the interactive program "Can I Kiss You? Dating, Communication, Respect, & Sexual Assault Awareness," which he presented previously at NMU. Proceeds from the sale of Voices of Courage will go to organizations dedicated to increasing awareness of the issues surrounding sexual assault.

The readers’ theater performance is sponsored in part by VOX, the Health Promotion Society, the Student Nurses Association, Psi Chi, the NMU Health Promotion Office, Public Safety and Police Services, Counseling and Consultation Services, and the Women’s Center of Marquette.
