Carol
Strauss Sotiropoulos (Modern
Languages and Literatures) wrote "Scandal Writ Large in the
Wake of the French Revolution: The Case of Amalia Holst," an
article published in Women in German Yearbook: Feminist Studies
in German Literature and Culture. It examines the book-length
treatise of a north German proto-feminist teacher and school director
writing in 1802. "Feminist hopes during the French Revolution
were all but quashed following the Terror, when a pan-European conservative
backlash snuffed out public devate over improving women's status
and social conditions," Sotiropoulos explained. "Amalia
Holst was one of few women willing to put her reputation at stake
to rekindle these debates. She wrote the treatise titled 'On the
Purpose of Woman's Advanced Intellectual Development.'" |
