Roy Represents NMU on Kennecott Citizens' Committee

President Les Wong has asked Mike Roy (Finance and Administration) to serve on the Kennecott Minerals Company's Citizens' Advisory Group.

Wong said that while the university is not advocating for or against the mining endeavor, it is important that a member of NMU’s senior administration have access to factual information on how Kennecott’s Eagle Project may impact Northern’s physical campus.

“Obviously we have students, faculty and staff who feel strongly one way or the other about this issue and I respect that," Wong said. "I suspect some of those people will also be on the advisory group. But my intent in asking Mike to serve in this role is solely to protect the university’s interest. For instance, we have heard that the trucking route may include a part of campus and, of course, that would have consequences to NMU and our students and employees.”

The advisory group is slated to begin meeting in late September.
