Naming Of Buildings And Facilities

PURPOSE

To ensure the guidelines for naming buildings and facilities at Northern Michigan University are followed.

APPLICABILITY

All Faculty and Staff

PROCEDURE

Anytime a building or facilities at Northern Michigan University is to be named the following procedure shall be followed:

  1. When the President of the University deems it appropriate, he/she shall establish an ad hoc committee for the naming of a particular building or facility.
  2. The ad hoc committee shall be composed of the following representatives:
    1. Two faculty;
    2. A representative designated by the President’s Council;
    3. A member of the NMU Retirees Association;
    4. Two students;
    5. Such additional appointments as the President deems appropriate.
  3. The Committee shall invite members of the University community, the alumni, and the public at large, to submit nominations.
  4. The nature and function of the building or facility shall be a factor in the consideration of names by the Committee.
  5. After due deliberation, the Committee shall recommend at least three names through the appropriate President’s Council member to the President. These names shall be in alphabetical order and with supportive comments for each nomination.
  6. The President shall make his/her recommendation to the Board of Trustees.
These procedures were developed not only to protect human subjects, but also to protect members of the University community from liability. In essence the polices protect both the subjects and the investigator. Faculty and staff are responsible for submitting reports of their activities for departmental and HSRRC committee review. Faculty are further responsible for submitting reports on student projects conducted under their supervision or as part of their class assignments and faculty/staff advisors are responsible for submitting reports for projects conducted in student or University organizations.
