PURPOSE

To ensure the guidelines for naming buildings and facilities at Northern Michigan University are followed.

APPLICABILITY

All Faculty and Staff

POLICY

The Board of Trustees is the final authority for the naming of buildings and facilities at Northern Michigan University and hereby sets forth the following policy:

  1. A facility is described as an entity within a building, or any other physical component of the University. It may be a room or series of rooms which comprise a specific program or activity.
  2. Buildings or facilities may bear the names of individuals or of organizations, things, or other inanimate entities.
  3. In the naming of buildings or facilities for individuals, one or more of the following guidelines apply. The individual(s) for whom the building or facility will be named:
    1. Must have performed outstanding service to Northern Michigan University;
    2. Must have performed outstanding service to education;
    3. Must have performed outstanding service to the State of Michigan or to the United States;
    4. Must have made a significant financial contribution covering a substantial part of the total construction cost of the building or facility.
  4. In the event of the naming of a building or facility for a person associated with the University, such an honor will be accorded only after that person has left the employ of the University.
  5. The Board of Trustees reserves the right to waive portions of the above, depending upon the circumstances of each individual case.
