High School Preparation

Nurses, in their practices, are required to make many critical and life saving decisions and to perform many important and precise technical functions. In order to carry out these functions a nurse must have a solid academic foundation at the high school level. Therefore, the faculty of the School of Nursing strongly recommend the following academic preparation in high school:

Algebra

2 years

Chemistry

1 year

Students without the necessary high school preparation in Algebra and Chemistry may need to take additional preparatory courses in these subjects in order to be successful in the required courses in nursing.

In addition, the following high school courses are highly recommended:

English

4 years

Science:

Biology

1 year

Physics

1 year

Social Studies

4 years

Mathematics

3-4 years

Pre-Nursing Students

Once you are admitted to Northern Michigan University and have indicated that you wish to pursue a degree in nursing you are considered a pre-nursing student. The freshmen year is a pre-nursing year. Students entering the freshmen year are assigned an advisor from the Department of Nursing and together they plan the academic program to complete the required courses. During the freshmen year, the student spends her/his time completing the prerequisite courses necessary for admission to the nursing major (see admission criteria). When the student is nearing completion of the prerequisites, and in consultation with her/his advisor, the student may apply for admission to the nursing sequence. An Application for Admission must be obtained from the Nursing Department Office and submitted according to the required deadlines.

Tuition Fees, Financial Aid and Housing

Students enrolled in the Nursing Program are subject to the same privileges and regulations as all other Northern Michigan University students. Financial assistance through loans, scholarships, and employment is available to nursing students. Please review the current Northern Michigan University Bulletin for more information and direction.

Clinical Agencies

The Department of Nursing is fortunate in that the Marquette County area is rich in the quality and variety of health care agencies available for students for their clinical experiences. Marquette General Hospital, Upper Michigan's only regional medical center, is just across the street from the University. In recent years it has undergone exceptional growth and offers a full range of medical specialties and other health services. Students have the opportunity to work on a wide range of specialty unites. Marquette General Hospital has a "state of the art" cancer treatment program, cardiovascular program, including open heart surgery, orthopedics, neonatal intensive care, rehab center, a wide range of psychiatric services, general medical and surgical care, and the finest in diagnostic and lab services.

Bell Memorial Hospital allows students to explore the range of services provided by a community hospital. Students can discover the range of general medical and surgical services as well as the pediatric and OB services offered there.

Marquette County Health Department, Marquette General Hospital Home Nursing, and U.P. Home Nursing provide a wide range of public health and home health experiences. Marquette County school systems lead to experiences in school nursing and health teaching.

Norlite Nursing home, Jacobetti Veterans Facility, and Marquette County Medical Care Facility all provide opportunities for experiences in long-term care and caring for the elderly. Marquette-Alger Community Mental Health Agency provides experiences in care of the mentally handicapped client. Bay Cliff Health Camp provides opportunity, along with Head Start and other child care centers, in caring for children with health problems. In addition, there are other numerous agencies which can be utilized to meet the unique educational needs of our students.

Another major benefit to our students, aside from their academic clinical experience, is that many of the agencies hire student nurses in special work positions. This gives the student the opportunity to work to earn money and additional clinical experience time. Once the student completes some of the basic nursing courses, many work opportunities become available.
