Freshman Seminar

UN 100B is a Freshman Seminar course for students selected from the College Transitions Program. The course focuses on the academic strategies, resource knowledge, and social networking necessary for freshmen to make the transition to college life. This course is to be taken in conjunction with the College Transitions Program (CTP).

Students enrolled in a Freshmen Seminar course usually take other classes together; what we call a block of courses. For example, the same twenty students enrolled in UN 100 will also take EN 111 College Composition, CIS 110 Computer Information Systems, and another course.

There are eight broad objectives for the Freshmen Seminar, which are accomplished during the semester. These objectives are to:

  • Help students explore new ways of learning, retaining, and relaying material to which they are exposed in the classroom and in their assigned and optional reading assignments.

  • Assist Students in further development of their skills in written and oral communication.

  • Introduce students to and help them become users of campus and community resources.

  • Engage students in career exploration and confirmation activities.

  • Help students understand the academic and career planning process and its importance.

  • Help students develop connections with instructors, teaching assistants, peers, and other members of the campus community

  • Increase self-awareness and equip students to use that knowledge to assist with future planning.

  • Introduce students to the diversity and unique opportunities present in college life.
