TABE

TABE -Test of Adult Basic Education - Pre-admission test

The test of adult basic education is designed to measure achievement in reading, mathematics, language, and vocabulary.

The test focuses on the basic skills required for a person to function in society.  All items and passages in the TABE are as free as possible from ethnic, age, and gender bias.

NMU administers the survey form of the TABE.  This version consists of six tests:  vocabulary, reading, comprehension, mathematics computation, mathematics concepts and applications, language mechanics, and language expression.

The TABE is published by CTB/McGraw-Hill, a division of McGraw-Hill School Publishing Company.

Students who are required by the admissions office to take a pre-admission test must contact Vocational Support Services (VSS).

  • Tests are given free of charge at NMU.  Call 906-227-2283 for an appointment

  • Tests may be taken at a site other than the NMU campus.  Contact VSS for more information.

  • Interpretation of all results will be made by the VSS staff.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I have to take the TABE?
The office of admissions reviews a number of factors when determining who needs pre-admission testing.  These include your high school grade point average and your ACT or SAT score.

Is this something I can study for?
Sure, review skills for each of the six testing areas, e.g. math skills, language mechanics skills, etc.  You may need to go your local library to obtain some books on the subject areas.

Will I be admitted to NMU if I take the TABE?
You are not guaranteed admission just by completing the TABE test.  A recommendation will be made to the Office of Admissions based on your test results.

What happens after I take the TABE?
If you do not take the TABE at NMU the test results need to be forwarded to the VSS office by the person who administered the test.  The VSS staff will make a recommendation to the Office of Admissions based on your test results.  You should receive a letter from the Office of Admissions informing you of their decision.
