NMU Rural Health Careers Camp - May 14-16, 2018

Offering students an introduction to the health care professions.

This camp provides rural high school students a hands-on learning experience about different health careers and allowed them to experience the opportunities available in the health professions. Students will experience health care simulations in nursing, clinical sciences, dentistry, medical, and sports science, students will also receive CPR training and a tour of Jacobetti Home for Veterans where they are able to learn how the various health professions work together to provide quality health care for individuals. Students will also receive information about education and training, academic requirements, financial aid and campus life. The staff for camp is comprised of NMU health professions faculty, health professionals currently in practice and college students studying towards a profession. MED-TALK 2017/High School Students Interested in the Health Professions

Med-Talk is designed for 9th through 12th grade students who are interested in a career in the health field.  Trending topics will be presented by experts in their fields and include:  Concussion, sleep, Distracted Driving, Cyber Bullying, Stress Management, Mental Health, Sports Nutrition, Substance Abuse Disorders, Importance of Self Love and LGBTQ issues.

"Pain Management & Opioid  Addiction" conference at NMU!

This conference will be for primary health providers and will address the urgent topics in healthcare and the community on pain management and opioid addiction through the lifespan.  Panel presentations will be from local and state professionals in healthcare and the legal system which will address concerns and solutions in this topic area.  Continuing education credits will be offered for primary and mental health providers for attendance.  The conference will be from 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. at the Lydia Olson Library on NMU campus in LRC109/111 with satellite locations at UP Health Systems, Hancock; Great Lakes Recovery Centers, Negaunee; Aspirus, Ironwood and LMAS District Health Department, Newberry.

Medical Education Credit:  4.5 hours

NMU School of Nursing CE:  4.5 hours

NMU School of Social Work CE:  4.5 hours

MI Certification Board for Addiction Professionals (MCBAP):  4.5 hours

The Upper Peninsula AHEC (UP-AHEC) hosted an Open Spaces Community Engagement event for Gogebic and Ontonagon Counties on August 9 titled "Healthcare Provider Recruitment and Retention Roundtable."  About 15 stakeholders and health providers from around the community gathered to discuss identified primary issues in health care for the region such as the recruitment and retention of providers to the area.  UP-AHEC will conduct follow-up planning meetings with Gogebic and Ontonagon Counties this fall and winter, with new programming set for 2017. 

Next Gogebic/Ontonagon Stakeholders meeting will November 22, 2016, 10:00 a.m. - Noon, at the Gogebic Community College room B22.  We will sharing results from our August 9th event.

Treating the Whole Community  The Mind-Body Connection - August 21, 2015

UP-AHEC is partnering with the Western Regional Center AHEC to host this webinar style conference here in the UP. The conference will run from 8:00a.m. to 2:00p.m. with a lite breakfast and lunch provided. Topics for for the conference range from mental health to language skills in inter-professional care with speakers from the western Michigan area. The cost of registration is $75 and has three participating locations: NMU, UP Health System - Portage, and Mackinac Straits Hospital.
