Yvonne Lee is in her 14th year at NMU. She serves as a faculty member in the hospitality management program and has taught nearly every course offered within that degree focus. Professor Lee was the 2002 recipient of Northern Michigan University’s Excellence in Teaching Award. Earlier in her career, she also received the Minnesota Governor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. She has been recognized for her teaching by the National Council for Advancement and Support of Education, Alexandria Technical College, Alexandria, Minnesota and College of the Ozarks.
Professor Lee is a member of the International Council on Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Education and is a certified hospitality educator. She has had extensive experience in the hospitality industry, working with a number of hotel and food and beverage companies, including Hilton, Holiday Inn, Radisson, Best Western and Perkins Family Restaurants. She has lived and worked across the United States, the Caribbean and North Africa. She also has done a significant amount of consulting and training, most recently, for American Airlines and the Iron County Community Hospital.
Professor Lee believes that teaching involves both the student and herself. Their combined actions will lead to shared knowledge and will be centered on her ultimate purpose of developing student competencies and talents. She prefers to use active teaching methods and the content of her course material is reality based. She shares her passion for and pride in the hospitality profession with her students. NMU’s size has allowed her every opportunity to advise and mentor her students who have had the chance to be involved in numerous practical learning experiences that they might not get elsewhere.
