2012 Summer Work Week Saves Money

During the summer of 2011, NMU experimented with a "4-10" work week, being open four days a week for 10 hours each day, as an energy and cost saving measure. The same "4-10" schedule will be back for the summer of 2012. Listen to President Wong's remarks on the subject here, during his annual convocation.

Over-Consumption Facts
The average American now consumes twice as much as they did 50 years ago. Here are some daunting facts about over-consumption in America: 99% of all that we buy is no longer in use in 6 months. Each person discards 4.5 pounds of trash daily. With 5% of the world's population, we consume 30% of the world's resources and create 30% of the world's waste. For our 1 garbage can of waste, 70 garbage cans of waste were created during the production process to create the stuff being discarded.

VendingMisers

NMU has installed VendingMisers on all of the cold drink vending machines on campus. By installing these devices, the estimated annual savings in electricity is approximately $7,000.
