Citizenship Edge Opportunities - Ongoing

For the Citizenship Edge, you will need 100 hours that may include a combination of service learning, community service, and civic engagement (a minimum of 10 hours must be civic engagement opportunities).  You will need to do three separate volunteer activities.


Possible Citizenship Edge Hours

Bell Hospital at 901 Lakeshore Drive in Ishpeming has several volunteer opportunities:

One is Kids Korner – This is a supervised play area (open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.) in which volunteers are able to interact with the young children but have no duties such as diaper changing, feeding, or disciplinary problems.  The children are there in the playroom for a maximum of 2 hours while the caregiver is at an appointment at the hospital.  You must receive a background check before being able to volunteer for this position; this is paid by Bell Hospital.  Duties for this job include:  customer service, interacting with children, and responsibility for scheduled shifts. 

Two Coffee Carts – There is one at the hospital and one at the Teal Lake Medical Clinic.  The hospital coffee cart is from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and the Teal Lake coffee cart is from 8:30 a.m. to Noon Monday through Friday.  Each cart offers Starbucks coffee, hot chocolate and goodies.  Duties include customer service, giving correct change and responsibility for scheduled shifts.

Gift Shop – The Gift Shop is operated solely by volunteers and is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.  The duties of this job include customer service, giving correct change and responsibility for scheduled shifts. 

The Information Desk is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.  Duties include customer service, being able to direct patients and possibly escort them to rooms, and responsibility for scheduled shifts.

Camp New Day U.P. provides children of the incarcerated with a loving, safe, spiritual, environment that promotes and nurtures self worth.  We’re currently looking for board members.  Michigan law states that board members must be at least 16 years of age; we also ask that you have a passion for youth. Divine Consign and Donated Furniture in Marquette, a non-profit organization supporting the Father Marquette Catholic Schools, is seeking store clerk volunteers on Thursdays from 1-7 p.m. for three-hour shifts (1-4 p.m. and 4-7 p.m.) and Saturdays from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. in two-hour shifts (9-11 a.m., 11 a.m.-1 p.m., 1-3 p.m.) at 2641 US 41 West next to Lawry's Pasty Shop.  If you are interested, please contact Carol at 906-458-0098.

Do you like to play bingo?  If so, the Eastwood Nursing Center in Negaunee is looking for volunteers on Monday-Friday's at 7 p.m. as well as Saturday's and Sunday's at 2 p.m. or 7 p.m. to assist residents who are physically challenged with bingo.  We are also looking for volunteers to do one-on-one visits with our residents and to assist them with outings (shopping and eating).  If you have questions or would like to volunteer, please contact Rose Moffatt, activity director, or Amy Fraley, assistant director, at 906-475-7500 ext. 121.  In order to volunteer at Eastwood, you will need to have a TB test (which is provided free of charge) and sign HIPPA and confidentiality policy forms.  Eastwood is located at 900 Maas St. in Negaunee which is 9 miles west of Marquette (when you come to the first stoplight in Negaunee, you will turn left and it is the first driveway on the right).

Do you like working with youth (ages 5-17)?  If so, Lake Superior Village Youth and Family Center, 1901 Longyear Ave. in Marquette, is looking for volunteers to do weekly tutoring (up to 10 students), to plan and lead a weekly program for youth (up to 6 students), and to develop a homework program (1 or 2 volunteers).  If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Ben Platt at 906-228-3771.

The Marquette County Medical Care Facility, located at 200 Saginaw St. in Ishpeming, is looking for volunteers to work one-on-one with the geriatric population.  Interested applicants are subject to a background check, a two-step TB test along with an interview and reference check prior to placement.  This is a great way to share any special skills you have with the elderly.  If you are interested, please contact Tina Koski at 906-204-1021.

The Mather Nursing Center is looking for volunteers to come and visit with some of their residents who need some socialization.  Anyone who knows American Sign Language would have the opportunity to use their skills within the facility.  Volunteers could come and visit between 11:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. on days determined by the volunteer and the center.  If this opportunity interests you, please contact Kim Johnson at kjohnson@matherhealthcare.com or by phone at 906-485-1073.

Possible Citizenship or Real World Edge Hours

The Mather Nursing Center, 435 Stoneville Road in Ishpeming, is looking for volunteers to assist residents with bingo, playing games or cards, reading the paper/books/magazines, visiting, helping with "theme parties," or going on outings with residents (i.e, shopping, to the casino, etc.).  If you are an art student, you could help residents paint or sketch, either on-going or a one-time event.  If you are interested in helping with the art, we will provide the supplies (sponge painting, sketching, working with construction paper, etc.).  Please contact the activity director, Pierre Ogea, at 906-485-1073.

The NMU Hoop House is a collaborative learning center for eaters of all ages who are curious about where food comes from and want to learn more about how it is grown. Through student-driven research and community education on sustainable agriculture, the project aims to expand our local food system, increase food security, and promote access to fresh, healthy food for everyone. Norlite Nursing Center
is a licensed skilled nursing home.  We believe our first responsibility is to our residents.  We are dedicated to providing the highest professional care in a home-like and loving environment.  We believe we are responsible to the communities we serve.  We accept our role in enhancing the quality of life by supporting civic pride, economic development, better health and education, and protection of the environment.  Duties for volunteers include helping with bingo, art projects, games, movie nights, socializing, community outings, men's group, parties, entertainment, or your own idea!  Volunteers are needed seven days a week at numerous times.  Residents enjoy being entertained; Norlite is always looking for individuals or groups that enjoy doing music performances, fine art performances, and/or educational lectures that involve participation from residents.  Please contact Vanessa Miazga at 906-228-9252 or norlite@gmail.com for more information.

Planned Parenthood is looking for volunteers to help with information tables, peer education, promotion, and/or mailings/flyers. Planned Parenthood offers low cost, confidential, quality health care for men and women including birth control, STD testing, pap and breast exams, pregnancy testing, rapid HIV screening, and options.  All services are provided by licensed medical professionals.  Planned Parenthood is located at 1219 N. The Silver Creek Thrift, a ministry of Silver Creek Church in Harvey, is looking for volunteers to help with a variety of store-related activities. Volunteer opportunities include help with sorting, pricing, and hanging items, marketing, internet searches for pricing of certain items, selling items on Craigslist and Ebay and cleaning or repairing items.

Silver Creek Thrift (SCT) strives to offer quality items at pocket friendly prices to people in our community. Revenue from sales will allow SCT to provide various community outreach programs and assistance to those in need. In addition, SCT is collaborating with various local agencies (i.e., UPAWS, Lakestate Industries, Harbor House, etc.). to reuse/repurpose non-usable items, providing them with items they need for their operations or for educational and fundraising opportunities, This also helps SCT avoid unnecessary landfill use and work towards a greener planet.

Teaching Family Homes, a 31-year-old non-profit agency, is looking for students to tutor high school students who come from abused and neglected homes. Tutors are needed Monday through Friday from 4:45-6:00 p.m. at 1000 Silver Creek Road (at the very end of Silver Creek Road). Interested in volunteering with hospice patients?  Volunteers are needed during varying dates/times throughout the Marquette County area.  In order to volunteer, you must complete paperwork and attend a volunteer orientation class for U.P. The U.S. Forest Service is looking for volunteers to help with gardening and the green house.  It would be one day a week for a half day.  While this is not a paid position, it would look good on the resume.  In the garden, you would be pulling weeds, gathering seed, etc.  In the green house, you would be watering plants, washing pots, etc.  If you are interested, please contact:  Sue Rabitaille, Hiawatha National Forest, 1030 Wright Street, Marquette or at 906-360-3855.

Possible Citizenship, Leadership, or Real World Edge Hours

The YMCA of Marquette County is looking for enthusiastic volunteers with a swimming background to coach, teach, and mentor youth ages 6-12 for the YMCA Killer Whales in the pool.  The team begins Monday, October 1 and runs through March.  Practices are evenings Monday through Friday, usually beginning at 5:30 p.m. and running 1 to 1 1/2 hours, at the YMCA pool, NMU's PEIF pool, and sometimes at Marquette Senior High School's pool.  We'd like to have 2-3 volunteers to be able to work 1-2 days per week with our youngest athletes.  Volunteers will help improve swimming skills and building confidence in young athletes who are just starting this sport.  Much of the "practice" involves teaching through games and water play.  A background as a competitive swimmer or swim instructor is preferred.  If you are interested, please contact Matthew Williams, Director of Competitive Swimming at the YMCA at 906-869-5048 or mwilliams@ymcamqt.org.
