A 2015 graduate, Melissa Zeglen walked in to the SSS office explaining that she was in the process of enrolling at NMU and was interested in the SSS program. I thought ‘Great!’. When she went on to state that she had just moved to Marquette from another state and wanted to be a full-time student on top of being a single mother of three, I thought to myself, ‘do you have any idea of what you’re doing?' She definitely knew what she was doing.
Melissa has proven to be one of the most dedicated and driven students our SSS program has had the privilege to serve. As a senior she had a double major in the Political Science-Pre Law and Economics while carrying a 3.95 GPA. Melissa served as a peer tutor in the SSS program, a community supporter Marquette Women’s Center and has been an active volunteer in her children’s classrooms.
Melissa has said that NMU provides a supportive environment where anyone can succeed if they put their mind to it. Her advice to her peers:
- Stay motivated to achieve your goals
- Seek out interaction with your professors as they will help you get the most out of your education
- Be active in your education and take advantage of the opportunities available to you
