SLFP Community Events

Party for the Pets & Journaling Social

This semester, the Student Leader Fellowship Program has put on two very successful events. The Ice Cream Sundae and Journaling Social, and the Party for the Pets both helped bring awareness to social issues while supporting the Marquette Community.

On November 19, the Student Leader Fellowship Program hosted an Ice Cream Sundae and Journaling Social. Partnering with Big Brothers Big Sisters, the SLFP taught 57 young students from around Marquette the benefits of journaling. SLFP students believe that encouraging writing at a young age could help children be more passionate about reading and writing as they grow older.  After watching a short video and completing some creative journaling, the students cut out pictures from magazines to decorate their own journals. After working hard, the students got to enjoy ice cream sundaes! We would like to thank Ronen Zilberman of Marquette Magazine for the pictures. Read more about the social at

On November 23, the SLFP raised over $1,600 for the Upper Peninsula Animal Welfare Shelter (UPAWS)! SLFP students hosted a pancake brunch at the Masonic Building in downtown Marquette. About 150 people attended and got to experience delicious food, fun games and a performance by Maggie Barch’s modern dance group. Double Trouble DJ’s helped keep the energy up with some upbeat music and a fun photo-booth! People who attended also got to enjoy live music, face painting, and caricatures by NMU students. The SLFP is very happy with the money they raised for UPAWS and would like to thank all of the people who attended this event.
