Faculty-Led Study Abroad in CUBA in Winter/May 2014

Have you always wanted to go to Cuba, but strict U.S. travel restrictions got in the way? Now you can legally travel/study abroad in Cuba thanks to changes in U.S. regulations regarding educational travel in Cuba and NMU’s agreement with the Universidad de Matanzas in Matanzas, Cuba (approximately 50 miles east of Havana).

This Faculty-Led Study Abroad program involves a 4-credit course, taught in English, called "Cuban Culture and Film." We will read and discuss the William Luis’ "Culture and Customs of Cuba" and watch a number of Cuban films and documentaries (both inside and outside of class). Topics include: Cuban history, key figures such as Fidel Castro and Ernesto "Che" Guevara, religion, food/drink, sports, media, cinema, music/dance, and art. Students who have already received credit for SN300, 301, or 302 at NMU and who complete their assignments in Spanish will receive credit for SN495. All others will complete assignments in English and receive credit for IP295. The course grade will be based on attendance/participation, homework, movie questions, journal, and final essay.

We will have regular course meetings during the Winter 2014 semester, culminating in an 11-day trip to Cuba in May 2014 (approximate dates May 7-18). During our time in Cuba, we will have several guest lectures at the Universidad de Matanzas and take numerous excursions to museums and other sites of cultural and historical interest, including:

In Havana: Plaza de la Revolución, Museo de la Revolución, Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, El Capitolio, Plaza de Armas, El Morro and La Cabaña, Museo del Che, Callejón de Hamel, salsa class

In and around Matanzas: Museo de la Ruta de los Esclavos, Museo Farmacéutico, Ediciones Vigía, Iglesia de Monserrate, Cabaret show, beach (Varadero), Museo a la Batalla de Ideas (Cárdenas)

The anticipated program cost will be $2800-$3000. This program fee includes the following:

Medical insurance
Round-trip flight to Havana (from Miami)

Interest meetings will be held in the Language Lab (203 Jamrich) on the following dates:
