John McGovern of Pensacola, Fla., is in his second year as a resident athlete in the weightlifting program and competes in the 85- kilogram weight class. A sophomore at Northern Michigan University, McGovern is a biochemistry/ pre-medicine major. Last semester, he earned a 3.65 grade point average, earning a position on the United State Olympic Education Center All-Academic Team.

McGovern recently earned a silver medal at the National University Championships in Johnson City, Tenn.              (April 5 – 7).  He lifted 135 kg in the snatch and 172 kg in the clean and jerk for a 307 kg total, breaking his personal best record by 16 kg.

McGovern’s future goals are competing in the 2016 Olympics and completing medical school.
