MARQUETTE, Mich. — Two Greco-Roman athletes from Northern Michigan University’s Olympic Training Site qualified to compete in the 2014 FILA Junior World Championships in Zagreb, Croatia, after placing first in their respective weight classes this past weekend at the 2014 U.S. Junior World Team Trials in Madison, Wis.
Six other NMU-OTS athletes also competed in the event. Coach Rob Hermann said after the meet, “The eight juniors that competed in Madison left it all on the mat. They are all winners and competed like warriors.”
First-place finishers, along with their weight class, opponent and match score included: Arthur Carmona, 55 kilograms/121 pounds, defeated Ibrahim Bunduka 2-1; Alejandro Sancho, 66kg/145.5lbs., defeated Renaldo Rodriguez-Spencer 2-0.
Second-place finishers included: Kyndall Rutz, 50kg/110lbs., defeated by Josiah Seaton 2-0; Travis Rice, 60kg/132lbs., defeated by Dante Rodriguez 2-0; Barrett Stanghill, 74kg/163lbs., defeated by Jon Jay Chavez 2-1.
With their win, Carmona and Sancho qualified to compete in the 2014 FILA Junior World Championships on August 5-10 in Zagreb, Croatia.
