Track and Field Finishes Tenth at GLIACs

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University indoor track and field team finished tied for 10th at the 2013 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship on Sunday (Feb. 24) from the Kelly Family Sports Center at Grand Valley State University. The Wildcats totaled 13 points on the weekend and tied with Lake Erie College. NMU finished ahead of Wayne State and Malone.

“The team fought hard, which is evident in the number of personal best marks that we were able to post,” NMU coach Cheree Hicks said. “All the coaching staff can ask is that they compete and give their all. Everyone did that this weekend.”

Sophomore Brittni Wirtz scored five points in the 60-meter dash in an NCAA provisional qualifying time 7.75 seconds. She had the best finish on the weekend for NMU in fourth place.

Senior Colby West scored three points in the 400m dash with a sixth place finish and personal best time of 58.54 seconds.

Senior Delaney Lovett placed sixth in the triple jump, scoring three points. She cleared 35 feet, 6 inches.

Sophomore Larissa Halonen (5:15.02) finished 11th in the one mile. Sophomore Katie Granquist (2:19.71) placed 12th in the 800 run. Junior Mallory Celaya (10:24.25) finished 13th in the 3,000.

The 4x400 relay team placed 12th. Granquist, junior Sydney Schultz, Wirtz and West ran the event for the Green and Gold.

Grand Valley dominated the women’s standings with 229.5 points.
