Women’s Hoops Opens Home GLIAC Action

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team hosts its first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference games this weekend. The Wildcats will first tip-off against Hillsdale College on Thursday (Dec. 6) at 7:30 p.m., followed by the University of Findlay on Saturday (Dec. 8) at 3 p.m. from the Berry Events Center.

Head coach Troy Mattson’s team enters the week after splitting its opening GLIAC games of the season last weekend. Northern (4-2; 1-1 GLIAC) edged Walsh University, 58-57 in the first-ever meeting on Thursday. In its second game from Canton, Ohio, NMU was defeated by Malone University, 64-56 on Saturday.

Sophomore guard Lauren Gruber leads the ‘Cats in scoring on the season, averaging 12.5 points a game in six games. On the boards, freshman forward Nea Makela is averaging six rebounds per game, while sophomore forward Abbey DeBurin averages 5.5.  Sophomore guard Alyssa Colla has the most assists for the team with a season total of 21 (3.5 per game).

Hillsdale College (2-1; 1-1 GLIAC) also comes into Thursday’s matchup after splitting its first weekend of conference play. On Thursday, the Chargers fell to Northwood University 70-51. Hillsdale bounced back on Saturday, defeating Lake Superior State, 77-51. Megan Fogt leads the way, averaging 16.4 points a game, in five starts for the Chargers, and also leads in total rebounds with 12.8 per game.

Northern has the advantage in the all-time series against Hillsdale, 27-14, but have lost seven out of the last 10 meetings. The two teams met during the 2011-12 season, when the ‘Cats traveled to Hillsdale, Mich. and were defeated 68-62. In the game, Colla had 17 points for NMU, after going 5-for-10 from beyond the arc.

Findlay remains undefeated on the season (4-0; 2-0 GLIAC) after defeating Lake Superior State, 71-51 on Thursday and Northwood, 78-66 on Saturday. Kayla Brown averages 23.8 points a game in four starts for the Oilers this season. On the boards, Tai Dotson leads with an average of 5.5.

The ‘Cats lead the series against the Oilers, 14-4, including a 79-76 victory a season ago in Marquette. Findlay had the opportunity to tie the game, but missed a three-pointer at the buzzer after Colla made 1-of-2 from the free throw line. Colla finished the game with 24 points, with 13 in the second half.
