Soccer Season Recap

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University soccer team finished the 2012 season with a 4-13 overall record and a 3-10 mark in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference under ninth year head coach Matt Granstrand.

Two Wildcats were honored by the GLIAC in the postseason awards. Senior forward Amelia Johnson was selected to the All-GLIAC First Team while sophomore midfielder Kim Rietveld was an honorable mention selection.

The ‘Cats opened the season with a pair of losses in Minnesota to Minnesota Duluth (4-0) and Bemidji State (1-0). The first win of the season was over Minnesota Crookston (2-0).

GLIAC play opened at Michigan Tech on Sept. 10 as the ‘Cats fell 2-0. The next weekend, NMU traveled to Ohio and earned a split with a loss to Notre Dame College (2-0) and a 2-1 win over Lake Erie.

Northern went 1-2 on a three-game home stand with losses to MTU (5-0) and Tiffin (3-2) and a 3-0 win over Findlay to end September.

October began with a seven-game losing streak but ended with a strong 7-0 victory over Malone on the final day of the season.

Sophomore forward Tevun Sellers led the Wildcat offense with four goals. Johnson along with sophomore Taylor Smith each had three goals. Freshman Gabriella Garza had two goals in her first season in the Green and Gold. Rietveld had two goals and an assist.

Also scoring a goal for NMU were seniors Brekelle Sellers and Becky Fiorenza, sophomore Heather Amr and freshmen Hailey Beyrand and Tiffany Trembley.

Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Shelby Conard started 16-of-17 games and finished the season with 75 saves and 36 goals against for an average of 2.69. She had three shutouts on the season.

Seniors Fiorenza, Johnson, Jenna Peplinski and Sellers wrapped up their careers in 2012. Johnson finished her career with 49 points for sixth place in NMU history. Her 21 career goals rank her in a tie for sixth. Fiorenza and Johnson never missed a game, appearing in 76. Fiorenza finished with six goals and six assists. Sellers had three goals and 10 assists in 71 career games. Peplinski appeared in 38 games.
