MARQUETTE, Mich. – Sophomore Emily Allen, of the Northern Michigan University cross country team, was named NMU’s Student-Athlete Scholar of the Month for September by the Athletic Council.

Allen is a biology major with chemistry and military science minors and a contracted Reserve Officer Training Corp (ROTC) Cadet. She holds a 4.0 grade point average and is on the cross country and track and field teams. Allen is also a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society.

Professor Kyle Rambo from the Military Science Department nominated Allen.

“Emily Allen is a talented and gifted student who works extremely hard at balancing all three areas of her life as a scholar, athlete and leader,” Rambo said. “She is excelling in a very difficult major/minor academic combination; a proven athlete on the university’s track and field and cross country teams and was recently named the top individual cadet at the grueling Ranger Challenge competition. Her drive, determination, and competitive spirit helped lift her team to victory.”

“On the weekend of Oct. 5-7, 2012, Cadet Allen led her ROTC Ranger Challenge team to victory against 23 teams from colleges and universities in Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula,” Rambo added. “Additionally, she earned the top individual score among both male and female Athlete-Scholars in the Army Physical Fitness Test.  This victory marks the first championship NMU has won in this competition in over 20 years and her five-member all female Ranger Challenge team will represent Michigan and Wisconsin at the 3rd Brigade regional competition at Camp Dodge, Iowa in November.”

Allen, a native Ravenna, Mich., finished 12th in the season-opening cross country meet at Michigan Tech on Aug. 31 and 13th at the U.P. Championship on Oct. 12, NMU’s home meet. She also ran at the Blugold Invite (Sept. 21) and the Roy Griak Invite (Sept. 29).
