Women’s Basketball Begin GLIAC Play on Road

MARQUETTE, Mich. – After going undefeated at the Ashland Holiday Inn Classic over the weekend, the Northern Michigan University women’s basketball will open Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play this weekend. The Wildcats will travel to Canton, Ohio to take on Walsh University on Thursday (Nov. 29) at 8 p.m. and Malone University on Saturday (Dec. 1) at 3 p.m.

Northern (3-1) enters the week after defeating Mercyhurst College and Urbana University on Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday (Nov. 24) against Mercyhurst, the ‘Cats walked away with the 59-44 decision, led by sophomore forward Maria Almquist and freshman forward Nea Makela each with 10 points. Makela also led in rebounds with nine.

In Sunday’s (Nov. 25) matchup against Urbana, The Lakers had the six point advantage at the half, but the ‘Cats came back in the second to take the game, 71-61. Sophomore guard Alyssa Colla led NMU with 19 points and Makela had a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore forward Abbey DeBruin led the team with 12 rebounds.

Walsh (1-0) played its last game back on Nov. 17 against non-conference Ursuline College, defeating Ursuline, 63-50 in Canton, Ohio. The Cavaliers were led by Lydia Corle with 15 points and added five rebounds, in her collegiate debut. Tara Gallupe finished the game with nine points and a game-high eight rebounds.

Malone (3-0) enters the week after dominating the University of Akron-Wayne College, 113-29 on Tuesday, Nov. 20. The Pioneers 3-0 start on the season is the first since the 2006-07 year. Six Pioneer players scored in double figures, led by Trisha Seilhamer who had a career-high 17 points and Tara Schaffter added 16. Malone will face Michigan Tech in its first GLIAC game on Thursday at 8 p.m. from Osborn Hall in Canton, Ohio.

The two games will be the first meetings for NMU against Walsh and Malone, as this is the inaugural season for both schools in the GLIAC. Walsh and Malone are former members of the American Mideast Conference.
