Weightlifter Travels to Israel
MARQUETTE, Mich.—United States Olympic Education Center weightlifter Breanne Carlson will compete in the 58-kilogram weight division Wednesday, Nov. 7, at the World University Championshipsin Eilat, Israel.
Carlson, who is from Peshtigo, Wis., qualified for the event last March by placing second at the 2012 National University Weightlifting Championships held in Shreveport, La.
“It is an honor to be able to compete in this event,” said USOEC resident head coach Vance Newgard. “The quality of athletes attending the championships is impressive. She will face some tough competition.”
Carlson first discovered Olympic-style lifting four years ago and has excelled at the sport ever since earning her way onto the USOEC resident team. She is looking forward to the biggest trip of her career, which she hopes will be a step toward her goal of competing in the Olympics.
“I am proud to be part of the USOEC Weightlifting team and representing us at the World University Championships,” said Carlson. “I have enjoyed my time in the program and look forward to continuing my training in hopes to attain my dreams.”
Carlson recently earned a master’s degree in exercise science from NMU, but her love of the sport did not end with her collegiate career. She continues to lift with the USOEC’s club team.
