Greco-Roman Wrestlers Make World Team

Marquette, Mich.—United States Olympic Education Center Greco-Roman wrestlers earned four out of seven spots on the University World Team during yesterday’s University World Team Trials in Colorado Springs, Colo.

In the 55-kilogram weight class, Max Nowry of Wheeling, Ill., faced Mike Fuenffinger of the Minnesota Storm. Nowry dropped his first match in the best out of three series, but came back to win the next two matches, securing his spot on the University World Team.

Nick Alverez of Miami will join Nowry on the team. He took gold in the competition’s 66-kg weight class by defeating Joe Locksmith of the Navy Mat Club 2-1.

A battle between two USOEC residents in the 84-kg weight class saw Mark Stenberg of Lockport, Ill., out wrestling Zachary Nielsen of Zimmerman Minn., 2-1.  

In the 120-kg weight class, Toby Erickson of East Helena, Mont., also faced a USOEC teammate. Erickson earned his trip to the University Worlds by winning two straight matches against Parker Betts of St. Michael, Minn.

Three other USOEC wrestlers also competed, earning silver in their respective weight classes: Paul Tellgren of Anoka, Minn., at 60 kg, Tanner Andrews of North Aurora, Ill., at 74 kg and Ethan Dondlinger of Slinger, Wis., at 96 kg.

The gold medalists will travel to Kourtane, Finland, to compete at the University World Championships Oct. 2-7.
