Greco-Roman Wrestlers Qualify for World Team Trials

MARQUETTE – United States Olympic Education Center men’s Greco-Roman wrestlers competed in the U.S. Open Senior Nationals in Cleveland, Ohio last weekend.
Spenser Mango (St. Louis, Mo.), a Northern Michigan University senior, won first place in the 55 kilogram weight class after defeating Jermaine Hodge (Colorado Springs, Colo.) in the championship match.
NMU sophomore Max Nowry (Wheeling, Ill.) placed fourth in the same division after losing the third-place match to Ryan Mango (St. Louis, Mo.). Nowry, who normally wrestles at 50 kg, stated, “Almost all of my practice partners are that [55 kg] weight class so that helps me when I wrestle above my weight.”
Paul Tellgren (Anoka, Minn.), an NMU junior, placed fifth at 55 kg by beating Nikko Triggas (Moraga, Calif.) in two rounds.
NMU senior Chas Betts (St. Michael, Minn.) came up short in the third round against Cheney Haight (Boise, Idaho). After each scored 1-0 wins in the first two rounds, Haight came out with the 2-0 decision in the third to place Betts in second.
Chad Hemerson (Orange, Calif.), an NMU junior, placed fifth in the same division after a comeback defeat over Talan Knox (Colorado Springs, Colo.).
Taking seventh place at 84 kg was Ben Provisor (Stevens Point, Wis.). The NMU freshman dominated Nate Patrick (Chicago, Ill.) and held him scoreless to take the match in two periods.
NMU student Ben Sanchez (Leominster, Mass) came out on top in a close match with Ellis Coleman (Oak Park, Ill.) at 66 kg. Sophomore Tanner Andrews (North Aurora, Ill.) came in seventh in the same weight class.

Senior Pete Gounaridis (Leominster, Mass.) pinned Chris Skretkowicz (Lexington, Va.) in 30 seconds to take seventh in the 96 kg weight class.
USOEC wrestlers also competed in the FILA Junior Nationals in Cleveland this weekend. Nowry, who placed in the U.S. Open Senior Nationals, also became a back-to-back champion in the 50 kg junior division after beating Nick Roberts (Hooversville, Pa.) by technical fall.
NMU freshman Mark Stenberg (Lockport, Ill.) defeated Provisor in two periods to take first place at 84 kg. Also at 84 kg, Ryan Hope (Carol Stream, Ill.) overcame Davion Willis (Milwaukee, Wis.) to place fifth.
