MARQUETTE- Members of the United States Olympic Education Center weightlifting team will be competing in the Criollo Cup October 20-26 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Competing in the Cup are Northern Michigan University sophomore Sara Cowles (Daytona Beach, Fla.) in the 53 kilogram weight class and NMU post bachelorette student Collin Ito (Vista, Calif.) in the 105+ kg weight class.
“My strategy will be taking each lift as its own and focusing on completing attempts,” said Ito.
USOEC coach Andy Tysz is confident in the athletes and looking forward to the competition. “I think that they are going to do well; training is going well,” says Tysz. “They will perform well as individuals.”
Tysz was also selected to coach of the United States men’s team. The Criollo Cup is a replacement even for the World University Championships according to USA Weightlifting. World University Championships were cancelled by the International Weightlifting Federation.
