Weightlifters Gain World Experience
MARQUETTE— Two United States Olympic Education Center weightlifters competed at the Junior World Championships June 14-21 in Bucharest, Romania.
Northern Michigan University sophomore Robin Feuerman (Altamonte Springs, Fla.) competed at 63 kilograms. Feuerman snatched 71 kg and clean and jerked 89 kg, lifting a total of 160 kg. She placed 12th overall. This was Feuerman’s first world competition.
“It was a really good experience to be with lifters of that level, it pushes you and helped me learn how to control my nerves.” Feuerman said about the competition. “It was a lot cooler because it was a world-wide competition.”
Feuerman qualified to compete at the Junior World Championships by earning gold at the 2009 National Junior Championship.
“The Juniors [World Championships] has been my dream for five years now,” said Feuerman. “It’s almost unreal that I’ve made it now. I like being the best at everything I do and I’m working hard and doing the best I can here.”
NMU sophomore Sarah Cowles (Port Orange, Fla.), a new USOEC recruit, competed at 53 kg. Cowles completed a snatch at 59 kg and a clean and jerk of 84 kg for a total of 143 kg and finished 13th overall.
