USOEC Greco-Roman Wrestlers Finish in Top 10
MARQUETTE – The United States Olympic Education Center Greco-Roman wrestlers claimed three gold medals and 15 top-10 finishes from the ASICS U.S. Senior National Championships and FILA Junior National Championships April 7-11 in Las Vegas, Nev.
At the U.S. Senior National Championships, Northern Michigan University post-baccalaureate students Harry Lester (Akron, Ohio) and Jake Fisher (Platte City, Mo.) won gold and silver in the 74-kilogram weight class. Lester defeated Fisher in a 2-0, 1-0 decision. Lester also won the Senior National Championships in 2005.
NMU junior Spencer Mango (St. Louis, Mo.), a 2008 national champion, placed second at 60 kg. Third-place finishers were seniors Cheney Haight (Orem, Utah) at 74 kg and Chas Betts (St. Michael, Minn.) at 84 kg. Other USOEC wrestlers placing in the top 10 at the U.S. Senior National Championships were: post baccalaureate students Nate Engel (St. Helena, Calif.), and Jacob Curby (Lagrange, Ill.), who finished fourth at 55 kg and 66 kg, respectively; sophomore Zac Nielsen (Zimmerman, Minn.), fourth at 96 kg; senior Andy Bisek (Chaska, Minn.), fifth at 74 kg; freshman Max Nowry (Wheeling, Ill.), fifth at 55 kg; senior Kerry Regner (Darlington, Pa.), sixth at 66 kg; junior Peter Gournaridis (Leominster, Mass.), sixth at 96 kg; junior Ben Sanchez (Leominster, Mass.), eighth at 66 kg; and sophomore Aaron Briggs (Tucson, Ariz.), eighth at 74 kg.
USOEC facility users who competed were David Arendt Jr., who finished fourth at 120 kg; Tim Bleau, who was defeated by Regner at 66 kg in the second match of the day; Marco Toledo, who had a 1-2 tournament record at 74 kg; and Chad Hemerson, who was 1-1 at 84 kg.
Winning gold at the FILA Junior National Championships were NMU freshman Max Nowry (Wheeling, Ill.) and sophomore Aaron Briggs (Tucson, Ariz.) in their respective 50 and 70 kg weight classes.
Other wrestlers who finished in the top 10 included NMU sophomores Paul Tellgren (Anoka, Minn.), second at 55 kg and Jonathan Drendel (North Aurora, Ill.), third at 74 kg; freshmen Corey Hope (Carol Stream, Ill.), fifth at 70 kg and Ryan Hope (Carol Stream, Ill.), sixth at 74 kg; and sophomore Bo Beckman (Orem, Utah), seventh at 66 kg.
