Weightlifters Qualify For World Team
MARQUETTE— United States Olympic Education Center weightlifters competed at the 2009 National Junior Championship and Pan American Qualifier March 20-22 in Foster City, Calif.
They were also vying to achieve an overall qualifying standard to become one of seven athletes named to either the Junior World or Pan American teams that will represent the United States at future events.
In the National Junior Championship, Northern Michigan University freshman Robin Feuerman (Altamonte Springs, Fla.) snatched 73 kilograms and lifted 88 kg in the clean and jerk for a total of 161 kg and a first-place finish in the 63 kg weight class. She qualified for the Junior World Team. She will compete in the Junior World Championships in June in Romania.
In the same competition, freshman Jessica Gallagher (Longwood, Fla.) received a gold medal for her snatch of 68 kg, but she did not complete a clean and jerk lift at 58 kg.
Competing in the Pan American Qualifier, NMU seniors Justin Brimhall (Miami, Fla.) snatched 125 kg and clean and jerked 150 kg for a 275-kg total and Collin Ito lifted 150 and 196-kg, respectively, for a 346-kg total. Ito set a personal record in the clean and jerk.
Rounding out the USOEC team, sophomore Sarah Robles (Desert Hot Springs, Calif.) snatched 96 kg and clean and jerked 126 kg for a 222-kg total.
The Pan American Qualifier determined the national ranking, with the top seven athletes qualifying for the Pan Am team. Robels was ranked seventh overall for the women after the competition and will lift in the Pan American Championships help in Chicago, Ill., in June.
“Sarah had an excellent meet,” said head weightlifting coach Andy Tysz. “She went out and made every lift, which is awesome. She had near flawless movements.”
