MARQUETTE, Mich. – United States Olympic Education Center weightlifters set nine personal records at the American Open Nov. 3 in Birmingham, Ala.
USOEC lifters also hit 13 out of 14 possible opening lifts, which USOEC weightlifting coach Andy Tysz says is “good and extremely rare.”
Junior Justin Brimhall (Miami Fla.) took third overall in the 77kg weight class. The USOEC also brought home three fourth-place finishes from senior Ashley Suggs (Whitesboro, Texas) at 69 kg and juniors Paul Roberts (Bartow, Fla.) at 85 kg and Collin Ito (Vista, Calif.) at 105+kg. Also for the USOEC, post baccalaureate Vance Newgard (Homewood, Ill.) took sixth place at 105+kg.
Sophomore Alexandria Argueta (Aurora, Ill.) placed sixth in the 63kg weight class and freshman Chelsea Kyle (Sandusky, Ohio) finished sixth at 58 kg.
“It was a good solid competition with excellent depth,” said Tysz. “I am very pleased with all their performances. It really shows us what we are up against.”
