MARQUETTE—Two United States Olympic Education Center Greco-Roman wrestlers returned to the United States yesterday (Aug. 13) after competing in the Ion Cornianu Memorial Tournament Aug. 10-12 in Brasov, Romania.
Harry Lester (Akron, Ohio) moved up a weight class from 66 kilograms to 74 kg. He finished the tournament in fifth place with a 2-2 record.
“I wanted to concentrate on wrestling instead of cutting weight, so I moved up a weight class,” said Lester. “It was an experience. I got to see some good wrestlers [at 74 kg] that I normally wouldn’t wrestle.”
Lester began the tournament with wins against Saynov Ivaylo (Bulgaria) and Timut Malinin (Russia). After a strong start, Lester lost to Manuchar Kvirikvelia (Georgia) and Aliaksanar Kikiniov (Belarus).
“He [Kvirikvelia] was a great wrestler,” commented Lester. “He is a world bronze medalist and 2004 Olympian. He was very different than anyone I’ve ever seen. I’d like to wrestle him again.”
Teammate Joe Betterman (Chicago, Ill.) lost his first match at 60 kg against Tibor Komaroni (Hungary).
