MARQUETTE—The United States Olympic Education Center’s weightlifters will compete at the National Championships May 11-13 in Schaumburg, Ill.
Northern Michigan University alumnus Rachel Hearn (Savannah, Ga.) will be among the USOEC athletes lifting. She hopes to bounce back after a disappointing finish at the Collegiate National Championships last month in Reno, Nev.
“I plan on my opening attempts being a little more conservative [than they were at Collegiates] and I am really focusing on completing each individual lift,” said Hearn, who will lift in the 75-plus-kilogram division. “I was third at the National Championships last year and I would like to maintain or improve that ranking.”
Hearn graduated from NMU last week. She admits that coursework and training have been difficult to balance, but she is confident that she will perform well.
“This year I am carrying a heavy class load…so my training has suffered slightly,” she said. “[But,] I have been training really hard for the competition since it is the primary qualifier for the Pan Am Games and the World Championships, which both lead up to the Olympic Games next year. The competition is fierce this year and I will be pleased to total and place.”
Teammates joining Hearn at the competition include NMU sophomore Alex Argueta (Aurora, Ill.) at 63 kg; juniors Justin Brimhall (Miami, Fla.) at 77 kg and Paul Roberts (Bartow, Fla.) at 85 kg; and post-baccalaureate student Vance Newgard (Homewood, Ill.) at 105-plus kg.
