Swimming and Diving Begins GLIAC Championship

CANTON, Ohio – The Northern Michigan University swimming and diving team began competition at the 2013 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship on Wednesday (Feb. 6) from CT Branin Natatorium.

Sophomore Jordan Iverson placed fifth in the 1,000 freestyle in 10:33.39. Sophomore Tara Dowling placed 10th in the event.

The 800 relay squad had a fourth place finish in 7:40.36. Freshman Crystal Bennet, sophomore Emily Bourguignon, Dowling and sophomore Debbi Lawrence swam for the ‘Cats.

The 200 medley relay also placed fourth as Bourguignon, senior Olga Budiansky, Bennet and Lawrence swam.

“We had a good night tonight,” NMU coach Heidi Voigt said. “It wasn’t great but we held our places in the two relays. Two swimmers scored in the 100 and Jordan got an NCAA B cut so that was the highlight. We’re hoping for a great day tomorrow.”

Competition continues on Thursday (Feb. 7) with the preliminaries beginning at 10:30 a.m. and the finals at 5 p.m. Events on tap for Northern is the 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle and one-meter dive.
