In 1993, he took over the responsibility of the men’s golf team. An excellent golfer, he won the Upper Peninsula men’s amateur championship in 1981, as well as the club championship at Wawonowin Country Club (Ishpeming) in 1995.

A native of Negaunee, Mich., where he was a standout athlete, Ellis earned three collegiate letters in basketball and four in golf at Southwest Missouri State University. He transferred to Northern Michigan where he completed work on his bachelor’s degree in physical education in 1983.

He and his wife, Lois, are the parents of David and Daniel.  Both sons are currently attending Michigan State University and playing on the men’s golf team.
